Abstract

A calcium nickel orthophosphate complex has been isolated and shown to display a solid state structure similar to that of α-Ca3(PO4)3 with columns of cations surrounded by (PO4)-nickel-(PO4)-vacancy columns in hexagonal array. Calcium and nickel atoms are distributed within the cation columns. Ca8.5Ni9.5 (PO4)12 (space group C2/c, a = 22.819(5) Å, b = 9.944(2) Å, c = 16.982(3) Å, β = 99.97(3)°, Dcalc = 3.67 g cm-3, Z = 4, R = 5.59% for 3216 obs. refls.) shows cation columns to contain 29.2% nickel and 70.8% calcium atoms.
